Announcement from Alnwick/Haldimand Township

Statement from Alnwick/Haldimand Township Mayor and Northumberland County Warden John Logel
on the death of Councillor Raymond Benns.

Grafton, ON – March 22, 2019 – It was with great sadness that I learned yesterday evening of the
death of Councillor Raymond Benns at his home in Baltimore.

Ray was a lifelong resident of Alnwick/Haldimand, and was widely recognized for his devotion
to our community. First elected to the Township Council in 1998, Ray dedicated the following
20 years to public service, including four years as Deputy Mayor (2010-2014). Under his leadership,
the Township achieved many significant outcomes for the community; far too numerous to list.

Whether connecting with residents and businesses at community events, or committing his
time and energy to the boards of local organizations like the Ganaraska Region Conservation
Authority, Safe Communities Northumberland, or the Centreton Community Centre,
Ray was staunch in his support of activities that would sustain and grow the health
and prosperity of our Township.

Beyond his political endeavours, Ray was heavily involved in the agricultural community.
Together with Marg, his wife of over 50 years, he managed a successful hog farming
operation until his retirement. Family was a priority for Ray, and he took great joy in spending
time with his sons Jeremy and Steven and their families, and was pleased for any opportunity
to share his love of fishing with his four grandchildren.

I was fortunate to know Ray from a very early age. And whether he was staring me down
from the pitcher’s mound getting ready to sail one of his fast balls past me when we were
teenagers or, later in life, sharing measured perspective on an important policy issue across
the Council table from me, I always knew – as anyone who knew him knew –
that I could count on his heart of gold.

Ray kept the best interests of Alnwick/Haldimand residents in mind with his every step.
He was a dedicated township councillor, a respected community member and a true friend,
and he will be greatly missed.

On behalf of Alnwick/Haldimand Township and Northumberland County Councils and staff,
and indeed the broader community, Brenda and I offer our deepest condolences
to Ray’s family and friends.
