Located an hour east of Toronto, the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand is located within Northumberland County and stretches from Lake Ontario to Rice Lake.  Currently, we are looking to fill the following vacancy:

Public Works Labourer

  • Permanent, full-time position (40 hours per week)

Reporting to the Public Works Superintendent and/or Public Works Foreman, in this position you will be responsible for the safe operation of public works equipment, and the performance of physical labour as required.

Particulars of the Position

  • Possible shift work and weekend work is required
  • Salary range $42,806.40 to $51,147.20

Education and Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Completion of Grade 12 education (OSSD or equivalent)
  • Minimum valid Class G driver’s license. (DZ preferred)
  • Previous experience in public works or road construction would be an asset.
  • Hard working, self-motivated with strong mechanical aptitude and experience in the use of hand and power tools, regular vehicle and equipment checks.
  • Current CPR and First Aid, Health and Safety and WHMIS Certificates
  • Demonstrated ability in effective customer service and awareness of cultural and accessible diversities
  • Effective inter-personal and oral communication skills.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintains equipment, vehicles and tools in safe operating condition by following acceptable maintenance and servicing schedules;
  • Assists with maintenance projects such as road construction;
  • Installation of signs and sign repair;
  • Maintains pavement. Applies cold patching to fill holes in pavement and hot patching for the treatment of cracks and holes;
  • Clears brush and trees and grass maintenance, maintains weed control;
  • Collects and removes garbage / debris from roads and adjacent areas;
  • Responds to complaints from the public and if appropriate forwards complaints to the Public Works Foreman or Public Works Superintendent;
  • Apply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of duties in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and policies of the Township of Alnwick Haldimand;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Work consists of moderate to heavy lifting over 20 kg, climbing, walking, twisting, bending, pushing, pulling, working in awkward positions, and working in all types of weather conditions.

               1. PART TIME FIRE FIGHTERS

The successful applicants will work under the supervision of senior officers to combat fires, perform rescue duties, administer first aid, respond to hazardous materials incidents and operate and maintain firefighting apparatus and equipment. Positions are available at Fire Station #1-Grafton, Fire Station #2-Centreton and Fire Station #3-Roseneath.

Required Qualifications

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada

  • Ability to understand and communicate in English

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older

  • Be in possession of a valid “G” driver’s license with a clean abstract and be willing to obtain a class “DZ” licence

  • Minimum Grade 12 Secondary School Diploma or Equivalent

  • Valid Standard First Aid and “Basic Rescuer” CPR ( Level C) certificates preferred

  • Able to successfully complete all required fitness assessments, agility tests and medical evaluations

  • Provide a criminal information check upon a conditional offer of employment

  • Able to take and carry out direction from Officers and work well with other members of the Department

  • Live within a reasonable distance to stations
